With “Back to School” being just around the corner for most, you almost always hear a collective sigh about this time of year. Whether it’s from moms ready for a break, kids ready for a change, families ready for routine, this time of year brings about some big changes for everyone!
One of the things we do to celebrate back to school is to have NO school! A freedom we have in homeschooling is our schedule, and while we’ve already started our new school year (might as well do school on these hottest days of the year and take off during nicer temperatures!), we do celebrate the official first day of school with everyone else in our state – by not going to school!
We celebrate the day all the public school kids go back to school by having donuts for breakfast and spending the morning at the park, going out to lunch and maybe a movie! It’s a treat we’ve been doing since our oldest began school, and it gives us a nice day off after we’ve been busy for a few weeks already. But what’s most special is that the boys look forward to this day every year. It marks the official Back to School Season. It’s also nice to be able to have the park to ourselves after a summer full of kids
Other ideas for Back to School Traditions for your family:
*Spend a morning going shopping for school supplies, then out to lunch
*Writing names and years and grades on a ‘school’ themed prop, and taking photos before heading off to school
*Everyone staying home from work to see all the kiddos off to school after a big special breakfast
*One last stay up late night before the first day (since you know that the first day of school is fairly easy), snuggled up and watching movies, refusing to believe that tomorrow is the first day (which is also something we do!)
*Spend a crafty day a few days before school preparing backpack tags, book covers and other treats to make school days personal
*Special dinner/after school snack time to chat about all the things happening for the new year
