Miscellaneous Monday – Earth Day 4/24
Good morning! April 22 was Earth Day. Did you know that? I didn’t even think about it until that day so I was a little bummed. We had many other things planned that day so we couldn’t really go out and fully ENJOY Earth Day. It had me think what exactly IS Earth Day? I know we try to be a little more conscious about the Earth, maybe plant some trees, go for a hike, or try to recycle…but what is it really all about? I visited earthday.org for some more info.
On April 22,1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.
There’s been monumental rallies throughout the years, ever since the first Earth Day in 1970. Acts have been passed, agencies have been created, millions have tried to better the Earth and change their mindsets & habits. It’s been pretty great, if you look at it in the long-run. We still obviously have a very long way to go & to improve. And that’s one reason why we still celebrate Earth Day every year. We can do whatever we’d like…go attend rallies, plant more trees & flowers, clean up trash/recycle, and we can even go out and SEE the beautiful Earth that we have.
