Miscellaneous Monday – Purple Day
Happy Monday, everyone! How did the weekend treat you? I had a busy but fun weekend attending a concert with friends and then doing some singing of my own . . . pretty much a perfect weekend for me. And, I’m extra excited because today is Purple Day–and purple is my favorite color!
As I researched Purple Day a little bit, I found that it isn’t just about the color purple:
Purple Day is a celebration aimed at raising worldwide awareness of epilepsy, a condition that affects over 65 million people globally. Cassidy Megan, a nine-year-old from Canada, founded Purple Day in 2008. Cassidy’s efforts were supported by the Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia (EANS). Lavender is the international colour for epilepsy and is also a colour that symbolises solitude. This led to purple being the colour of choice for this celebration.
In addition to being the chosen color for epilepsy awareness, purple (Ultra Violet to be specific) is the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year.
A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.
Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.
Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The color is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energizes the communities that gather there and inspire connection.
