Twelve Awesome Ideas for 12-12-2012

Nope – today isn’t the apocalypse. Nor is it my birthday (darn). Probably not your anniversary, either, so don’t panic (but if it is your anniversary – HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!)

What is 12-12-2012? Nothing special, really, but it could be a totally awesome day to make some really great memories, photograph some awesome images, and record some of life’s best moments!

12 Awesome Ideas for 12/12/12 | Sweet Shoppe Designs

Twelve Awesome Ideas for 12-12-2012

1. Do 12 Random Acts of Kindness through the Day. You will be amazed at the joy you bring by letting someone else in front of you in the line at your favorite retailer this time of year. Even more so if you visit a nursing home and sit to listen to the stories of some fabulous people.

2. Write 12 letters to your spouse or child for them to open each month for them to open on the twelfth day of each month for the next year.

3. Call or text 12 people that you love today. It’s never too late, never an inconvenient  time, never a bad idea.

4. Take photos of your children or pets twelve times during the day to capture their day. Though, I’m pretty sure I can just click one of our cat and it will be exactly the same twelve more times during the day.

5.  Document the price of  TWELVE items in your everyday life that are important to you for 2012.  Because you know in twenty years, you’re going to look back and and think, “Man…do you remember when a Starbucks Double Ristretto Venti Nonfat Organic Chocolate Brownie Frappuccino Extra Hot with Foam and Whipped Cream Upside Down Double Blended was only $3.50?

6. Donate $12 to your favorite charity – just because.

7. Find TWELVE items from around your house that could bless someone else, and donate them. Of course, no one really wants the plastic bag full of random happy meal toy parts, but do you remember that old digital camera you have stashed in the closet? I bet there’s a kid just dying to want a chance to begin to capture his life in photos that would be so grateful for it.

8. Collect twelve tokens that represent who you are and bury them in a time capsule. Write a little note about why it’s important to that person. Make a note to dig it up in twelve years!

9. Buy someone you love a dozen of their favorite things today.

10. Find time to pray for your world for twelve minutes today.

11. Scrapbook your favorite twelve songs, favorite books, favorite movies, or family activities of 2012.

12.  Take a photo of you and your family in front of a digital clock at 12:12 or holding up “12″ numbers made from cardstock or another goofy way to commemorate the day. (You know we had to stick that one in there, right?)

And to make it last – SCRAP IT!!!!!!!! We’d love to see how created memories for 12/12/2012 and recorded them!!! What will  you be doing for 12*12*12?

(BIG BONUS if you wish Meg a Happy Birthday on 12/12/12)

Happy Thanksgiving!

I would like to wish all my friends overseas a very happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy the times with your family!

Here in Europe we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s a typical American holiday and most people over here  only know it from the movies. I got to know it better since I began scrapbooking and joining CT’s, lol, because every year I get to scrap with Thanksgiving kits for them.  And I’m really glad that I got to know it because I think it is such a meaningful holiday!

Having to scrap with Thanksgiving kits is great because it makes me stand still to think about the things I’m grateful for as well. We live in a self-centered, material society and so many people feel unhappy about the things they don’t have that we almost forget to be grateful for all the treasures we do have. I’m thankful for having a good health and a wonderful family who is in good health as well. I’m thankful for so many other things and every year a scrapbook page is added to my memory keeping that documents this. This is something I wouldn’t have done if it weren’t for my CT work. So I’m grateful for that as well.

The other day I was surfing on Pinterest (again!) and I found this great idea on the website lillightomine.com. This lady has invented the ‘Light ‘em up project‘. If you haven’t heard about it, you should definitely go check out her blog. Basicly what she’s doing is teaching her kids to do Random Acts of Kindness for others and to thank people who serve them every day all through the month of December. You could do it as a variation on the Advent Calendar and have them do a RAK every day, or you could just put a bunch of RAK’s in a bowl and have them grab one occasionally through the year. There are even teachers who have adapted her idea to use it in the classroom.

photo from www.lillightomine.com

She provides a list of 50 possible RAK’s you could do with your kids but once you read through them, lots of other possibilities will pop up in your head. Some of her examples for showing gratitude are:

  • Leaving a small present and a thank you note for the people who pick up your trash every week.
  • Leaving an anonymous chalk message on the driveway of your neighbours to thank them for being such great neighbours.
  • Leaving a note in the public restroom thanking the person that cleans that stall
  • Leaving a note and a treat in your mailbox for the postman
  • Thanking your local police station with a heartfelt note and Christmas treat
And other RAK’s include:
  • Clean up an elderly neighbor’s yard
  • Pick up and put away all of the carts in the parking lot at any store in your area
  • Take a toy (or a bag full) to donate
  • Tape quarters to bubble gum machines
I love all the ideas and this is something I definitely want to do with my kids. I want to teach them to be thankful and to find joy in doing things for others without there being something in it for them. And this is the perfect season for a project like this! I’m so excited about this!
How about you? How do you teach your kids to be grateful and to be kind to others? If you’re in the States, maybe you can use some of these ideas for Thanksgiving today!
Happy thanksgiving! :)

For the love of Pinterest

Hi everyone – it is me Darla and I have to confess I LOVE PINTEREST! lol :) I have always had the love of finding new things on the internet and google used to be my go to for anything that I needed. Computer turns on with a blue screen – just google the solution, need ideas for one of my Girl Scout meeting – just google it and so on. Then Pinterest was born and my love of all things on the internet could be pinned quickly to various boards I created. All the fun craft ideas that I found were instantly pinned to a board, ideas for the holidays found their way to my holiday board, SSD portfolio challenge ideas were pinned for inspiration later on and of course when we had something coming up in our lives – a new board would be created in order to hold all my ideas. So when it came time to start thinking about what hairstyle I would entice my sister to do on my daughter, I started pinning all kinds of ideas of curls, up-dos and braided hairstyles for us to look at later. Now mind you my daughter clearly would prefer to wear her hair down and straight but knowing how I love her to look special on her big dance days – she usually gives in and lets me convince my sister to do something out of the ordinary with her hair. There is always a battle about whether her hair will be up or down and as a compromise, we decided half up and half down would satisfy us both. Here are some of the ideas that we pinned:

When homecoming came around, our house was a flurry with my daughter rushing to get ready, nails getting done and then the trip to my sister’s house so she could do Amy’s hair. We showed my sister some of our ideas we found on pinterest and she went to work on my daughter’s hair. Generally my daughter has very straight hair and curls never last long in her hair but my sister took on the challenge and starting out to create curls – lots and lots of curls. Flowers were pinned in between the curls and at last, Amy was done and ready for her dance! Pinterest again saved the day for our family! lol…..and here is what she looked like for Homecoming. I was one very happy and proud mom that day! <3

Have a wonderful scrapping day and if you are looking for inspiration – go to Pinterest and see what you can find there! :)

My desire is to create simple, lovely pieces that can be worn with jeans or your little black dress. I want each piece to be meaningful. Our custom jewelry is hand-stamped with your kids’ names or a special phrase or verse. I love to touch my necklace throughout the day and reflect on my husband and my sweet boys.

Each piece we create is a work of art—hand cut, hammered, polished, drilled and assembled with care. I am inspired by other artists—painters, scrapbookers, clothing designers and poets. I also love to soak up nature-the sky, the sea, the green hills. I let all these ideas and images swirl around in my mind and then I create. When an idea hits me I sketch it out and play until the perfect design comes together.

Digital scrapbooking has been my choice of creative expression since 2004. Since then, I popped out two children who remain the inspiration behind what I do. When I’m not scrapbooking or teaching, I enjoy hanging-out with my mini-me’s, cooking, singing, playing Bid Whist with family and friends, heading to the beach, rowing, and if it’s Fall watching football.
