Where do you call home?
I live in a town called Dendermonde in Belgium. That is about 25 km from Brussels.
Tell us a little about your family…
I have a daughter, Linske, born on the 5th of October, 2002. She’s a teenager now and if you have teenagers yourself, you know what that means LOL. I got married to Wim on August 31st, 2016, but we’ve been together since December 1999. It was a small ceremony but it was such a beautiful day and it was quite exciting too! We also have a cat, Felix, he is such a darling and he’s been with us for 10 years now.
When did you join Sweet Shoppe Designs & what’s your favorite thing about being a member of the team?
On November 19th, 2016, I received an e-mail from Robin with the promising title ‘Welcome home’ and my heart stood still for a second… I noticed there was an attachment too, so before I opened it, I was pretty sure, that the answer was ‘yes, we want you on the team’. My favourite thing about being here? I love how the designers all work together as a team. There is no such thing here as one person who decides everything, we discuss everything together. It’s just amazing.
How long have you been designing?
If you mean, designing scrapbook kits, then I have to say: June 2015.
What inspires you?
Everything: moods, feelings, colours, paint, patterns and textures… but also movies, music, books, places I’ve seen, vintage and old things and… Pinterest!
Tell us a little bit about your design process.
I always start with a theme first. Then I make a colour scheme. Once I have a colour scheme, I think of a title. I really need a title, it always brings me back to the theme of the kit. After I have all that, I do a brainstorm with myself, I choose images that inspire me for this particular theme, and I write things down. What patterns do I want, what kind of elements, what add-ons… I used to start with the papers first. I still make the solids first, but then I work on elements and patterns, in a random order. Sometimes I make an element that inspires me for a pattern and vice versa. If I think the kit or the pack is finished, I convert everything to jpg and/or png and I make the previews. I love making previews, it’s when everything comes together and I’m always sad when it’s done.
What is something we may not know about you?
I have worked as a secretary in a fashion company for 25 years. I resigned on the day that I celebrated my 25th work anniversary, because I had been unhappy there for years. I went to another (administrative) job that was even worse and it was only then that I realised that I had to start doing what I loved most: designing. I have always wanted to design, be creative… I always was too, but never professionally. I now work parttime in a small organisation at just an 8 minutes walk from my home, and in the afternoon I come hom to design, I’ve never felt better in my life!
