\u201cMemory,\u201d wrote Oscar Wilde, \u201cis the diary that we all carry about with us.\u201d When you hear the word diary, what is it you think of?<\/strong> Perhaps it\u2019s a small pink book with a locking latch that you stashed in your most secret hiding place so your siblings couldn\u2019t find and read it. Maybe it\u2019s a handsome leather journal with creamy acid-free pages you write in with your favorite pen every day with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. Possibly it\u2019s an app on your phone or tablet. Or maybe, like me, it\u2019s a series of notebooks you started with the best of intentions and abandoned after two or three entries.<\/p>\n

No matter the form it takes, a diary is a record of the writer\u2019s own experiences, observations, feelings, and attitudes. They can be a log of our day-to-day activities, a stream-of-consciousness expression of our thoughts, or a record of our dreams and hopes for the future.<\/p>\n

Doesn\u2019t that sound a lot like a scrapbook page?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

September 22nd is Dear Diary Day<\/a>, a holiday \u201caimed at celebrating the way diaries help us get our thoughts out and document our lives.\u201d Just like scrapbooks, diaries are a memory-keeping tool for ourselves and future generations. They illustrate how life has changed from one generation to the next, including how things are done, words that are used, and attitudes that have shifted or evolved.<\/p>\n
