It’s August, and that means not only back to school time, but a brand new edition of One Template, Many Ways!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In today\u2019s blog post, we\u2019re looking at the versatility you can find in a single layered template as our team of SugarBabes start with the same template and end up with fifteen unique digital creations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This month, we have the pleasure of featuring the dimensional beauty of The Nifty Pixel. Em’s templates feature stacks upon stacks of paper shapes and photographs with the most beautiful drop shadows, along with layers of texture and paint and all sorts of fun details. Her templates are all sized for 12″ x 12″ and are available in PSD, TIFF, and PNG formats for use with all your favorite digital scrapbooking programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We dipped into The Nifty Pixel’<\/a>s<\/a> Shoppe<\/a> and selected an older template set that’s perfectly poised to scrapbook all your school-themed photographs. It’s called Classroom Antics v.2 Page Drafts<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n

We decided to work with the template in the upper left corner. It includes room for two square photographs and so many bits and bobs! You’ll find everything from a binder clip to paper flags with editable text and gorgeous shaped drop shadows as well as a cute pencil you can completely customize!<\/p>\n\n\n

We gave this template to our creative team of SugarBabes and challenged them to use it as the starting point for as many unique layouts as they could come up with. Of course, every layout created with a template will look different when used with different digital scrapbooking kits and supplies, but there are additional techniques you can use that will result in even more uniquely lovely layouts. The Babes worked their magic and came up with fifteen different variations<\/strong> on this one template. Keep reading to learn more!<\/p>\n\n\n

Krista L. starts us off this month with a straight-forward interpretation of the template precisely as-is<\/strong>. She clipped photographs to the two square masks, added a variety of patterned papers and clipped them to the various layer stacks, and then finished it off with a smattering of decorative elements from her selected kit. The result is a sweet birthday-themed layout, demonstrating that although this template is designed with a school or education theme, it can be used for anything you wish.<\/p>\n\n\n

Biancka chose to use this template for a photoless layout<\/strong>. She replaced the photographs with pre-made journaling or pocket cards. This is a great way to tell a story for which you don’t have photos! I love the way Biancka used a variety of dimensional elements and lots of paint to add texture to her layout.<\/p>\n\n\n

I always have more to say on my layouts than I have space for, which is why I love templates like this one where with just a few adjustments, you can go heavy with the journaling<\/strong>. I removed some of the elements on the lower half of the page and replaced them with three columns of text. I was able to fit a whopping 750 words on the page with an 11-point font and 14-point leading, which is perfectly readable. That’s one more story recorded and added to our Library of Memories!<\/p>\n\n\n

Charlene’s take on this template allowed her to add in a great big, beautiful photograph<\/strong> that’s truly the highlight of her layout. By removing the journaling and paint layers, she was able to clip the big photo of her son in place of the background paper. Then she continued building the two layer stacks with paper and themed elements and added the traditional first-day and last-day photos from his freshman year. I think my favorite part of this layout is the way she placed the ruler, pencil, and test tube (in the same place as the pencil on the original template), making it look like someone left them sitting in a stack atop her layout. Super cute!<\/p>\n\n\n

Carrie’s spin on this template is a literal one as she rotated it 180 degrees<\/strong>, placing the photo stacks in the lower right quadrant of her canvas. Remember that when you rotate a template, you will often have to re-rotate individual text layers (like the date tag on the left) so they once again face in a readable direction. Speaking of text, I like the way Carrie added her two sentences of journaling to the label and eliminated the longer journaling block from the background. That’s the true versatility of layered templates – keep the layers that work for you and hide or delete the rest!<\/p>\n\n\n

Sherly shows us another way to use this template, rotating it 90 degrees counter-clockwise<\/strong> so the photographs now run top-to-bottom rather than left-to-right. This gave her a wide and short area for journaling (rather than the narrow and tall area in the template’s original layout) which let her play with different font sizes and faces in the title, date, and journaling. I absolutely love the monochromatic color scheme Sherly went with; the yellows on her page really support her photographs, and she jumps out of each image in her matching yellow shirt!<\/p>\n\n\n

Rebecca’s sweet layout about her son learning how to waltz in a parking lot lesson from his Grammy was absolutely begging for more than just two photographs, so she doubled the number of photo spots<\/strong> in the original template! She did this by duplicating the right-hand photo stack twice and placing these third and fourth stacks across the layout in place of the shaped tags and journaling. Then, she added her journaling to the bottom of each Polaroid-style photo frame. What a great technique to draw the eye across and down the page, following the action in the pics!<\/p>\n\n\n

Trina’s vacation-themed layout visually emphasizes the laid-back, peaceful pleasure of time with her husband by incorporating lots of whitespace. She did this by shrinking the template<\/strong> so it has 1″ margins on the top, bottom, left, and right and removing the background paper layers. It’s a small change that adds some visual “breathing room” and makes the layout feel less cluttered and busy despite all those fantastic paper layers. Beautifully done, Trina!<\/p>\n\n\n

Heather went the opposite direction with her layout – rather than shrinking it, she increased it to 130% of the original size <\/strong>and anchored the upper right corner of the template on her canvas. This results in bigger photographs (and with images as sweet as those, bigger is definitely better!). Notice that she used a journaling card for her title, and she replaced the pencil with a curved strip of word art and the fishing pole element from the scrapbooking kit. So fun!<\/p>\n\n\n

Cassie turned this template into a pocket-style layout<\/strong> by replacing the background paper layers with a template from Traci Reed’s 365 Unscripted Stitched Grid 7<\/a> pack. This gave her lots of space for photos and patterned papers, as well as the photo stacks and strips from the original template. I love the end result! So if you’re working on a pocket-style album, remember that you can incorporate elements from other templates to give your layouts a little extra punch!<\/p>\n\n\n

Speaking of combining templates … Amie shows us another way to take this template even further by mixing it with elements from another template<\/strong>. She incorporated layers from a template in Fiddle-Dee-Dee’s Sultry Summer 4-pack<\/a> – specifically the shaped background paper layers, paint, and a pair of photo masks that sat nicely in place of the journaling from the original template. It’s a great way to add some more variety to your layout as well as space for additional photos. Masterfully done, Amie!<\/p>\n\n\n

Judie proves once again that she can turn any template into an art journaling<\/strong> masterpiece! By replacing the photos and their frames with journaling cards and sketched or doodled elements, and adding lots of paint, ephemera, and other textured goodies from her kit of choice, Judie was able to use the template as a starting point for this gorgeous art journaling layout.<\/p>\n\n\n

Jaye’s page demonstrates how to pare down a layered template and use it to create a clean-and-simple style <\/strong>layout. She removed all the layers in the photo stacks except for the photographs themselves and hid all the paint, label, and element layers as well, leaving only the foundational paper layers and the single horizontal paper strip to anchor the photos. Then she added just a few tiny bits and bobs from her selected kit, and voila! A clean & simple creation that began with this same template.<\/p>\n\n\n

Jill took this template in the opposite direction and instead of a clean and simple style, she went for a cluster-filled <\/strong>page. I love her three big floral and foliage clusters and the way she incorporated them into the blank areas on the template. It creates a lovely visual triangle that draws the eye around the page, and I adore how she went with a color palette anchored in the mustard yellow from her photographs. Absolutely beautiful!<\/p>\n\n\n

Krista P. brings us our final layout with her freestyle take <\/strong>on this template. First, she added a third photo & paper stack by copying the layers from another template in the Classroom Antics v.2 Page Drafts 4-pack<\/a>. Instead of a photograph, she used a journaling card as the top of that stack. Then she took one of her travel photographs and, after applying a sketch filter to it, clipped it to the background paper. Finally, Krista shifted around the accents and elements so they balanced out the other changes she’d made. We love it when our Babes “go rogue” and really make a template theirs!<\/p>\n\n\n
