Walk the trails? Gather pine cones? Play hide-and-seek?" Lucas was so excited the words were coming out faster and faster. They had just arrived at the campground and taken their first breaths of the clean, fresh air. Dad held up his hand and smiled. "Wait a minute! No one goes anywhere until we've set up the tent and made a perfect campsite." Lily and Lucas helped their parents set everything up, then begged to be let out to explore. When Mom and Dad agreed, they each grabbed a water bottle and took off, promising not to go too far, to watch out for each other and to be back in plenty of time for supper. A short path wound its way through the pine trees to a small lake. They walked to the edge, leaning over to feel the cool, clean water run through their fingers. Like big sisters are often tempted to do, while Lucas wasn't looking, Lily couldn't resist flicking a little of the cold water onto him. He squealed and scooped up some of his own to toss back at her. They both laughed until their sides hurt. "Lily! Lucas!" Mom must be trying to get their attention, so they hurried back to camp. "Time to make dinner. See if you can find some small sticks for kindling, so we can start our campfire." Soon the air was filled with the pungent smell of wood smoke and sizzling hot dogs. They were all in agreement that food always tastes better when cooked over an open fire under a clear blue sky. After dinner was cleaned up, Lily and Lucas settled back to roast marshmallows and watch the sun set over the lake. A few harmless (and not too scary) ghost stories rounded out the evening's activities as the stars shone bright in a cloudless sky. Lily and Lucas couldn't help but feel that enjoying nature--and their family--in a place like this was just about as good as it gets.
