The heat from the sun warmed their skin as Lily and Lucas sprawled on beach towels laid out in thesand. This is exactly what summertime should feel like, Lily thought with a happy sigh. A hot sun, a cool drink and nowhere else I have to be. Lucas' voice interrupted the quiet calm. Lucas had stood up, moved off the towel and was ready to go. "Alright. That's enough of that. Come on, Lily! Let's go build a sandcastle. Or we could join that beach volleyball game. Or go looking for shells or starfish. Or--" She pulled her sunglasses down her nose a bit to look at him over their rim. "What if I don't want to do any of that? I'm comfortable right here." Lily settled the glasses into place and laid herself back on the beach towel. "In fact, I really think I'm cut out to be a beach bum." "Seriously?" Lucas couldn't believe what he was hearing. "You'd rather lay around getting all hot and sandy than have fun?" "Oh and building a sandcastle isn't going to get you all hot and sandy?" "Well, I guess it might, but at least I'll have something to show for it at the end of the day." Lucas shrugged it off, grabbing his plastic pail and shovel. He headed down toward the water, not looking back. Lily settled back in to the warmth of the sunshine and the sounds of the beach. But before long, she found she was no longer comfortable. The peace she'd just felt laying in the sun was all but gone now. Where did Lucas go? she wondered. The beach towel certainly wasn't going anywhere. She could always come back to it if whatever Lucas was doing wasn't interesting enough for her. Scanning the horizon, she found him almost at the water's edge where he was packing wet sand into his blue plastic bucket. All around him were bucket-shaped clumps forming what appeared to be the beginnings of a sand fort. She smiled and walked toward him. Well, maybe being hot and sandy wasn't the worst thing in the world, she decided. And maybe relaxing wasn't just about laying around with nothing to do.
