365 Days of Bliss – Homecoming 2011
Hi everyone, it’s me Darla with your Sunday post today. I am the mom to a teen daughter in high school as some of you may know and at the start of school year, homecoming talk starts to emerge in our household. It usually starts with a “Hey mom Homecoming is coming soon you know” and then I hear stories about so-and-so is going to Homecoming and then all of a sudden, I find little bookmarks appear on my computer of possible dresses Amy might want to wear. I always find this a bit amusing since technically she is not sure she is going and then one day, I get a phone call at work and she is crying. I instantly think something happened and start to panic when I hear her say through her tears “Mom I have to tell you something….” I think my life was like one of those reality shows you see on tv where the parent looks at the camera and gulps really big waiting for the next line to come out of your child’s mouth and then she says “Mom I was asked to homecoming! What do I do now?” I won’t lie I started to laugh – maybe out of relief that it was NOT anything bad but also because I was under the impression being asked to homecoming was a good thing! lol. I soon learned that her tears and panic were of joy and also shock that someone would bring flowers, a balloon and a pink bag (her favorite color) filled with her favorite sweets and then ask her to the dance in front of all the school. As a mom, I was really touched at the gesture that someone would think that much of my daughter to ask her to a school dance and as a scrapbooker, I couldn’t resist taking a photo of the homecoming sign and balloon for a future layout….

Of course, after we knew Amy was going to the dance, we started looking for dresses – something if you are a mom of a teen girl, you understand how this can be quite torturous as you go through all kinds of compromises until you find a dress you both can agree on. We finally found a beautiful purple dress that we both loved (and agreed on!) and then the hunt began on how we would do her hair. I won’t lie for weeks I scoured the internet and pinned all my ideas on my Pintrest board. Amy’s hair is straight – really straight and curls just don’t really stay in like we always hope they would. Finally we found a hairstyle that we thought might work for Amy and as luck would have it – there was a YouTube Video that showed us step by step on how to style her hair like Taylor Swift’s below:

I watched it over and over and thought “No problem – I can do this!” but secretly hoped for a miracle and it came when my sister said she could do her hair. So on the big day, timing was everything because as luck would have it – Amy had to perform in a parade that morning and also at a homecoming game. As my sister did Amy’s hair, I sat and did her nails and kind of smiled – I felt like we were on a mission to get my little princess ready for the ball! And when we were done, I have to admit I was overwhelmed with such emotions as I looked at this beautiful young girl that was standing in front of me. So how did it turn out? Well see our pictures below:

I am writing this post waiting for my daughter to come home to tell me all about the dance and then soon enough – I will create a layout for her so she can remember this moment when she is grown. And that is what scrapbooking is about – capturing memories you and your family will want to remember after the day has long passed away. Happy scrapping!

Awww, she’s beautiful! As the mother of a Jr. High girl I can relate – even though she’s not in high school yet we have had a few formal events to get ready for, but I look forward to the homecomings and proms to come!
