Netball sleepover chaos

This year my 8 yr old decided to take up netball at school for the first time. Brooke did amazingly well for a first timer, and by mid-season, had become the star goalshooter (insert proud mummy smile). I think part of the reason she enjoyed it so much was the fact that all her friends were in the same team. And a great bunch of girls they are too. They ended up playing in the A grade for their age, and came first out of 40 teams! Yay!

As the season came to an end, I thought it would be fun to invite the whole team of 9 to our place for a netball sleepover. The girls were super excited to receive their personalized invitations. (I used PJ Party by Eva and Kate, Kate’s add on element pack for the actual invitations, and Heather’s pillow box template). Each invitation had a different girl pictured in a sleeping bag, and each pillow box had a little bag of chocolate treats in it too.

The girls all arrived about 4pm on the Friday. They played till dinner time (pizza and chips), wrote something nice about each other on a piece of paper I’d given them, then settled down to watch a DVD. They were much too excited to stay still for long however, and after half an hour gave up on the movie and had supper instead. The chocolate fountain with fruit went down a treat. I always wanted a chocolate fountain, but after borrowing this one from a friend, and having to clean it afterwards….yeah…..not so keen now.

Having nine 8/9 yr olds and a 5 yr old in the house meant the sound levels were way beyond comfortable. Why they had to yell and scream so much was anybody’s guess. I was relieved to have them all asleep in the lounge by 10pm. Believe me it FELT a whole lot later 😉

The next morning they were up at the crack of dawn (of course), watched another movie, and had a pancake breakfast. After breakfast I presented them with their own laminated card of comments from the night before. I’d collated the compliments each girl had written, so she could take home some special thoughts about her from her friends. I can’t tell you how happy these girls were, and how touched they were by the comments they’d received.

Then it was time for activities/games. The mummy wrap game was hilarious. The girls all grouped into teams of 3, with my 5 yr old and Daddy making up non-competing team #4. They were given 3 rolls of toilet paper, and told to wrap one of their team members from head to toe. First one finished won. I found this game on pintrest, and have to say it is one of the easiest and most fun activities we’ve done.

They had fun making candy necklaces and just generally running around having fun, being noisy till lunch time. After a short break for lunch (American hotdogs and/or chicken wraps), we finished off with glow light fun in a darkened room. I was supposed to bring out the glow lights the night before, but totally forgot. Who knew little lights from the dollar store would keep them entertained for so long?

At 1.30pm the girls had to go to school in uniform to have their team photos taken. Once that was done they came back to the house with their parents to pick up all their gear and head home. This was the photo I took as they walked back to my house after the shoot. I love it.

I’m so proud of my Brooke and her team, and happy that I could give them a great wrap up to a fabulous netball season. Now just give me a few weeks to recover. My hearing is still not quite right ;D

P.S.  A week later they had their netball club prizegiving.  Brooke came home with 2 trophies – one for top team in their grade, and another for most improved player in her team.  Yay Brooke!
