Featured Staffer 11/5 – Juli Fish

Happy Friday everyone!! Can you believe November is already here? This year has completely flown by and it’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving (in the States) and Christmas are just around the corner!! Today we have your first chance at earning a bonus point to help you with your November Portfolio. We’re featuring our very own HybridBabe, Juli Fish!!

Here’s a little bit more about Juli:

I started out paper scrapping and rubber stamping in college back in the 90’s. I became a digital scrapbooker after my second daughter was born and I found that trying to paper scrap with two kids is impossible with all the “stuff”. I’ve been a digital scrapbooker for about five years now. I started into hybrid about two years ago when I had the craving to work with real paper again. I recently started using Photoshop CS5 for all my digital related projects and before that I used Photoshop Elements (which is really much easier!!).

Could you describe your workspace for us?

My digital workspace is located in our family room so I can be with my kids and husband while I scrap. I have a place for my laptop right next to our fireplace that is integrated into our built-in shelves. I put together the paper part of my hybrid projects in an area on the other side of our family room in our wet bar area. (We aren’t big drinkers, so why not craft there instead?) I keep a painted dresser in our family room filled with my supplies (things to alter, trimmer, paper, adhesive and of course glitter!) I have an area in the sitting room attached to my bedroom where I photograph my projects.

What is your favorite thing about hybrid? What is the most difficult thing about hybrid?

My favorite thing about hybrid is creating little gifts for people. I love little boxes and have a passion for patterned papers.  Creating just a little something that will brighten someone’s day is what makes this craft satisfying to me. Who doesn’t like a little something from a friend? Coming up with new and different ideas is always difficult for me. I really feel like I spend more time surfing the internet for ideas than I do actually scrapping or crafting.  Also, the cost of ink often makes me think hard about the projects I create. I try to go for ink saving projects that are quick and easy.

What are a few of your favorite, can’t-live-without supplies?

I love my Fiskar’s Paper Trimmer! I use it to cut out my cardstock and printed digital papers. I love that it has a scoring blade you can put in to score boxes. I think that scoring your lines before folding really makes a difference in how your project looks when complete. I also love decorative edge punches! I think that little bit of shape in a project gives each project an extra special touch and something that makes the project look way more complicated than it really is. Finally, I love glue sticks and double stick tape. I don’t think any hybrid artist should be without either!

How often do you scrap/create?

I scrap 1-2 layouts a week. I usually make 1 hybrid project a week (at least I try to) but sometimes with blog projects it’s more like 3 a week. I’m not too good about planning ahead!!

The following are 3 of Juli’s favorite projects and a little bit about why she loves each of them.

I love this project because of the bright colors and the owls (I love owls!). I really like that it sits on the desk in our kitchen and my daughter uses it everyday to remind herself what she needs to do to help around the house. I can look and see what has been accomplished without asking her if she’s done her chores.

These little bags ended up being oh so cute and the perfect size to tuck in a gift card for Father’s Day. I love fast and easy projects that look impressive and this is one of those kinds of projects!!

I love to make mini albums about our family’s weekend adventures – so picking this project was a no brainer. I really liked how the simple layouts turned out and that my daughter keeps this on her desk in her room. She likes to show it to her friends when they come over to play and tell them all about our Gator Friends camping trips.
