365 Days of Bliss: Day 41 – Dance Recital Season

Hi everyone!

Jamie here, with my very first Bliss post! For us, June is the season of ballet recitals, and it seems everyone I know is involved in one! Many of my friends have their daughters in ballet, and other types of dance. My daughter, Amelia, is 8 and been dancing since she was 4. Her love of ballet began when she first saw the “Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses” movie. As soon as she saw it, she began dancing everywhere, so that Fall, we signed her up to start lessons. At the time, we lived in a very isolated community, and had to drive over an hour each direction just to get her to ballet. I told her then that if she ever complained, we’d never do it again. Fast forward to now, and we still have to travel (we live in a small community), but she has never once complained or said she didn’t want to go.

To be honest with all of you, I LOVE ballet recitals. There were no dancing lessons in the town where I grew up, and I really loved to dance. I love music, I love the stage, the lights, costumes, hair, everything! It’s my favorite time of year! Here are a couple of pictures of my girlie, one before the performance, one during. Lucky for me, my husband takes great pictures! I haven’t had a chance to scrap with them yet!

The frames I used are Timeless Frames by Misty Cato.

Also, many people on Facebook asked me about her hair, because it’s only about shoulder length, yet the bun looks very large. It’s actually a sock bun, and here’s a link to how it’s done. I would have done a video myself, but I didn’t even think of it at the time, and I think this one explains it all! It’s good to get a sock that is the same color as the hair if you can! It’s easy, cheap, and takes only a few minutes! You will need pins too, if you need to secure it super tight. I put Amelia’s sock right to her head, so I had hair left over to wrap around the bun.

Please share with me some links to your little one’s recital photos or layouts, I’d LOVE to have a look at them!

Have a great Sunday!
Jamie 🙂

  • First, your DD is beautiful! This brings back memories! My DD started dance at 3, and she was inspired by the Barbie Swan Lake and Barbie Nutcracker movies! And the sock bun! She had waist length hair and it is very thick, so we used a piece of pantyhose to secure all that hair into a big bun on her tiny little head – LOL. Unfortunately, she got bored with dance by the age of 5 and began to play sports. As much as I love to watch her play sports, I do miss recital season.

  • Loved this post. I should call my mom and thank her for letting me take ballet and dance when I was little.

Also, loved the info on the sock bun. I had never heard of such a thing so I learned something new today.

  • How pretty! I never would have guessed how to do the bun…Now I wish I hadn’t cut my hair so short. Next episode should be how to use a curling iron..I own one, and understand the general principle..but I have no idea how to use it. hmm. You have a lovely daughter.

  • My daughters first recital was at the end of April. http://www.digishoptalk.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=1355369&title=be-you&cat=all We are all sad that this season is over until the fall. My daughter is so into ballet and practices each day. 🙂

  • Gorgeous pictures!! And I love the bun 🙂 I’ve used a bun donut before – very similar to a sock bun 🙂

  • Oh wow how cool is this! Thanks for the information!
