365 Days of Bliss: Traditions
Hey sweeties! This is Aly. This time of year always makes me think of Traditions. Family traditions, but especially holiday traditions. I love thinking back on my life and realizing that so many of my most wonderful memories have been centered around traditions that my parents set, and carried through with every year. Being a parent now, I realize the time, love, and effort that goes into each and every tradition that is established. Today I want to share a few of our families holiday traditions with you. I also am thinking of traditions that I don’t love, along with new traditions I want to possibly start.
Holiday Traditions I Love
Advent Calendars
Around our house, there is a countdown to the countdown. The kids love putting the pieces on our advent calendars. They also get one of those chocolate advents each year that they love. (The chocolate in those is like wax, but they love looking forward to that little treat each day.)
Christmas Books
I love to read through our Christmas books. They are one of the things we anticipate as we are unpacking the Christmas boxes. We like to add a new book to our Christmas Library every year. My favorite that we read this year is “The Three Trees.” We also started the tradition last year of reading “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.”
Holiday Clothes
I absolutely LOVE buying my girls cute Christmas shirts. The minute I see them in the stores, I have to buy them some. I LOVE LOVE LOVE them. Every year, aIso buy my kids new Christmas dressy clothes. I love to dress them up and take their photo in front of the tree. They usually don’t want to cooperate, but I don’t even care, I love it anyway.
Visiting Santa
Every year we take our kids to visit Santa. I like to do this towards the first part of the month so that the kids can give Santa their list, and that the list cannot change anymore!
Holiday Lights
I have to be honest… Christmas lights really aren’t my thing. I am a little OCD about how Christmas lights look. I like houses with a classic one row of straight, white lights. Every year we do go look at Christmas lights, because the kids absolutely love it. We go to Christmas Village where they have little houses with different decorations and themes, with lots of lights. This year they even had a Christmas Train to ride.
Christmas Cookies
We always make sugar cookies to decorate for Santa. The kids get so creative with their art on them. Such a mess, but so much fun!
True Meaning
I love all of the commercial things that come along with Christmas, but my absolute favorite part of the season is celebrating the birth of Christ. Every year I have a deeper understanding and love for this special Spirit that we celebrate at this time of year. My husband’s family established a tradition many years ago to have a Jerusalem Dinner at the first part of December. At the dinner we dress as people at the time of Christ’s birth may have. We eat fish, unleaven bread, grapes, avacodos, cheeses, and things that may have been there then. We think about Jesus and his parents. We think about the true meaning of this holiday. It is by far my favorite thing we do during the month of December.
Some of the Traditions that I don’t love:
- Gingerbread houses
- Christmas Lights on houses
- FREEZING temperatures
Some Traditions I am thinking of starting:
- Live Nativity
- Local Nativity Displays
- Elf on the Shelf
- Christmas Book Advent
These are a few of the things that consume us at this time of year. I am so grateful for my family and the traditions that we have! What are some of your traditions? What do you love or hate about the holidays?

My favorite part is our tree – always real and always decorated with ornaments people in my family have made for generations – I love looking at our tree and seeing a specific ornament that reminds me of my great grandma or my grandfather, etc.

Great post. My favorite tradition is my father waking us up at 6am every Christmas morning ringing sleigh bells and telling us “He’s been here!” He still does it even though I’m 39 and my sister is 42! Just a little memory from my childhood that I will always treasure.

I love seeing what others have as traditions around the holidays. I really like the idea of the dinner and how it involves the kids in the true meaning of Christmas.

I love your comment about getting the kids to take a nice picture in front of the tree and their not cooperating and you “don’t even care”. Exactly how I feel! One day they’ll be happy you made them do it! Merry Christmas!

We’re reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, too, and I love it. The Jesse Tree is my favorite Christmas tradition.

We do the Angel Tree every year, started it when I was pregnant with my first “in honor” of him and it’s become tradition. Driving around looking at lights is a weekend tradition, same for Christmas Eve day cookies. This year we attempted a gingerbread house and that was a mess. A fun mess for the kids, but as my first, it was such a disappointment! But I’m prepared for next year…

One I started this year was reading Christmas books each day. The kids have loved it and I can’t wait to find more books for our Christmas collection.
Great list of traditions!

Our traditions are different since we celebrate Hanukkah, but we love lighting the menorah together, playing dreidel, having family visit, and decorating the house. My kids think 8 days of presents makes Hanukkah the best holiday ever, but I’d rather give them fewer gifts of a higher quality.

Those are some great traditions, Aly, I especially love the dinner one. I may steal it. We do the Christmas countdown, bake cookies and gingerbreads, we have some items of decorations that I have cross-stitched myself. For next year I’m thinking about Nativity Advent Calendar – putting one figure up every day (I’m thinking felt finger puppets or crocheted). Merry Christmas!

We started Elf on the Shelf last year and the kids love it. Every morning they run down to see where “Duke” is – and it’s usually my 4 year old that finds him first. Now my 20 month old is pointing at him all day yelling “Doot, Doot”. Helps keep them in line – for a few weeks anyway!

We don’t have a lot of traditions during the holidays, but we always have the same meal on Christmas Eve and open gifts then too! I am hoping next year to start Elf on the Shelf – it looked like everyone had so much fun doing that this year!!!

We might do Elf on the Shelf next year. I never really knew what it was but I’ve seen so many Facebook pictures of them this year that I want to give it a try because it looks so fun! We got Advent calendars for the first time but the kids usually forget about them so we’re a bit behind. When I had Advent calendars as a child, I don’t remember EVER forgetting a day of chocolate!!!!

I also love Christmas traditions. Ours start with buying gifts and packing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. We also do advent calendars – with chocolate and scripture verses. We bake Christmas cookies and decorate gingerbread houses every year and on Christmas Eve we always eat Chili and read the Christmas story together.

Thanks for sharing your traditions and pictures. You’ve given me some ideas to add to our family traditions. We started the Elf on the Shelf here a few years ago and it has been a big hit, especially with my 3 year old this year.

My favorite tradition is definitely the late night candlelight service at church on Christmas Eve. It lets out at midnight, we wish our friends a Merry Christmas, and head home for to throw out some reindeer food and get some sleep.

We have quite a few traditions. We read a Christmas book most nights in December. We do the Elf on the Shelf and have had a lot of fun with it this year, although I’m running out of ideas, and if we can we go to the Christmas Eve service at our church.

My favorite tradition is driving around looking at Christmas lights. We pick-up some hot chocolate. Another night we went out to a local ice cream parlor for holiday ice cream flavors. It’s been a great Christmas season because of our Advent calendar.

Thank you for sharing your traditions. I love hearing about the traditions of others. My favorite tradition is buying a new ornament each year for our tree that summarizes our year as a family. Merry Christmas!

We do a book advent each year which is a lot of fun. One of the traditions that I grew up with was eating waffles for breakfast on Christmas day. Hopefully I will continue that with my own family now.

I really love Christmas Eve almost as much as Christmas Day. We spend the day together, have our traditions in the evening, it is great! It is all family time and not centered around presents at all, just being present <3

Great traditions.
One of our traditions that we started a couple of years ago, is not buying gifts for everyone, instead making them something homemade. We also take the kids shopping to buy gifts for other children on a giving tree.

My eldest is 2.5 so were in the process of trying to start new traditions with him. We made a gingerbread house (disaster!), did some christmas crafts, got him an advent calendar (he loves those waxy chocolates too!) and tonight were going to look at christmas lights. Next year, elf on a shelf for sure! i cant wait for that!

I love traditions at Christmas time. I grew up with some that I would love to continue, but I’ve recently decided to start traditions of our own. The biggest one is probably Elf on a Shelf this year – it’s going GREAT!! I also do the Portable North Pole message from santa, and they also always chat with Santa at least once before Christmas. This was the first year I ever decorated with lights outside, and next year I hope to do even more!! I love LOVE this time of year!!! Thank you for the chance to win!! I can’t WAIT to see the new site!!! XOXO 😀

3 of our many traditions are baking Pecan Tassies as a family, watching a Christmas movie on Christmas Eve and my husband reads the kids the original Night Before Christmas. Christmas just wouldn’t be the same if we didn’t do those each year! Thanks for the chance!
