This week we’re spotlighting Kim (jak)!

1_selfies

Hi, I’m Kim (jak) and I live in Sydney, Australia with my hubby and two boys. I don’t take ‘selfies’ and if I’m ever in a photo, which rarely happens, one or both of my kids are usually in it too. Adam (top right) is 8 and James (bottom left) is 6. They’re old enough to handle my big DSLR now and are happy to snap pictures of me so I might start appearing in more photos from now on!

I like scrapping different kinds of pages to capture our lives. Photos, and their stories, are the most important thing to me so that’s usually the focus of my pages. I take sooooo many photos though!
– I love how big photos look when printed in a photobook so I always include several pages with one giant photo covering most of the page.
– I often scrap one or two photos with plenty of white space. These are the pages I get most creative with.
– When I have multiple photos to scrap, of an event or a place we’ve been, I prefer a minimalist approach and tend to use templates with very few embellishments.
– About two years ago I got hooked on pocket scrapping to capture all those photos and little stories and snippets of life that aren’t worth a page to themselves. I do it on a monthly basis with 4-6 pages a month for an annual family album. I also do 10-12 pages a year for both my boys’ lives to include in albums for them.

I love so much SSD stuff, but things I tend to use a lot include:
– Traci’s Plastic Stitched Grids, for my pocket style pages. I’ve made 176 pages with them so far this year (playing catch up on about 8 years worth of photos!).
– Misty’s Trimmed Strips templates are a fairly recent discovery but I use them ALOT now.
– Outdoorsy kits.My kids and I love being outside exploring so I have a huge stash of outdoors themed kits to scrap all those photos. Kristin’s bundles are among my favourites. Flergs, Jenn Barrette and Christine from Digilicious have some great outdoorsy kits too (which are also all in my stash!!).
– Boy kits. I only have boys to scrap and I can’t get enough boy kits! Luckily there are plenty of designers here at SSD who do awesome boy kits.
4_places-I've-been
I did heaps of travelling before marriage and kids and have been to some amazing places.
– Peru. I loved everything about South America – the culture, language, the landscapes… I did a 4-day trek along the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu in the Andes which is one of the best experiences ever!
– Canada. I lived and worked in Vancouver for a couple of years and was out exploring the country at every opportunity. The Rockies and some remote parts of British Columbia are just stunning!
– China. This is another culturally amazing place and the food is incredible! I walked a section of the Great Wall which was physically torturous but very spectacular.
– Closer to home, we have some spectacular wilderness only an hour’s drive away in the Blue Mountains. It’s a great place for hiking.
5_animals
I love all animals, except snakes – too many close encounters with them growing up on a farm!
– I’ve always loved polar bears. I once went on a five-day dogsledding trip with Inuit guides in the Canadian Arctic in search of them!
– Pandas are also right up there on the cuteness scale. I saw lots of cute little guys like this at a panda sanctuary when I was in China.
– We have lots of beautiful native fauna in Australia. Wallabies and kangaroos are among my favourites. We often see them when we go out exploring or camping in the bush. I even had a pet (orphaned) kangaroo joey for a while when I was little.
– I also love sheep! I had lots of pet lambs when I was a kid who were great playmates for me on the farm, including a dear old friend called Poddy who was with me from when I was a baby until I was 18. He used to eat toast – never white toast though, it had to be wholemeal!
So that’s it. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading a little about me.
