Featured Designer FWP – Brook Magee

Happy Friday friends! It’s a new day and we’re debuting a new Featured Designer! As you know, over the past year and a bit, we’ve had all of our designers in the spotlight as our featured designers, so we’ve started fresh with a new series of featured designer FWP products that will center around the letters of the alphabet! Brook Magee is up next with the letter “B”, and she has an amazing kit for us—B is for Birthday. This kit is a beautifully unique take on a birthday kit. It could easily be used for both boys and girls as well as both adults and children. Take a look . . .

I asked Brook a few questions about this kit and the process she went through to create it. Here’s what she had to say:

Tell us a little bit about the direction you took for your letter of the alphabet.

B is for Birthday is a fun unisex birthday kit that can be used for both kid and adult scrapbook pages. I tried to keep things simple, bright, and fun. I initially thought to do some Richard Scarry vintage style animals in birthday hats but I kind of liked the direction of the kit without the characters, so I added more flowers and other elements. My favorite thing to make was the patterned paper with the bunches of balloons. So. Cute! I don’t often have time to make solo kits, so this was a special treat for me (and you)!

Did you find it difficult coming up with a concept for your letter?

I am not the best at decision making, so it was difficult. There are a lot of great themes that start with the letter B. My initial thought was something like, “B is for Brook.” But I figured most people wouldn’t want a kit all about me! Haha. So, I settled on “beach,” but then I realized it’s autumn and perhaps I should save the beach kit for beach season (in the Northern Hemisphere, at least). Finally, “birthday” came to mind and I went with it!

I also asked Brook a few more questions about herself, her love for this hobby of ours, and some of her favorite layouts or products:

Are you addicted to anything? What is it and why are you addicted?

I guess you could say I’m addicted to the beach! We live 3 miles from the Atlantic coast here in South Florida and the kids and I visit the beach weekly, and I visit even more than that while they are at their activities. In fact, I visit the beach SO often in the warmer months that I have to change my makeup to 3 shades darker because I tan so much. We’ve seen so many amazing things on our beach trips: in the ocean a HUGE manta ray swimming past us (I thought it was a shark at first); walking along the beach at night and finding a baby loggerhead sea turtle stuck on seaweed . . .  then watching it waddle into the ocean; hearing dolphins communicating with each other under the water and seeing them in the distance; finding so many unique and gorgeous shells and shark teeth washed up on the shore; swimming in the ocean while a rainstorm passed over us . . . and so much more. We live in an amazing place. I love that it inspires me to scrapbook!

Here’s a scrapbook page I made of one of my beach walks with my daughter using Singleton 90 – Diamond Moment:

Do you have a design soulmate? Someone you can always count on to bring out the best in you as a designer? Who is it and why are you so proud of what the two of you have created together?

Hm . . . this was hard, but I definitely think Rubia (Studio Basic) is my design soulmate. Whenever we work together we make amazing things. Our styles just compliment each other so nicely. She is such a hard worker, always up for new ideas, and such a HUGE encourager . . . but at the same time honest as can be. So you know when she says something, she means it. Seriously, she is good for my soul and makes me feel like I can do anything. It’s good to have people like that in your life. Kristin is like that, too! We make some amazing kit-babies, and I basically work “with” Kristin every week even when we’re not making things together. It’s like she’s sitting in the cubicle next to mine. They both give me motivation and inspiration all the time! Here’s one of my best moments with both of my best designer friends! I thought this kit turned out SO fun, just like the 3 of us are when we get together:

Show us three layouts from your creative team that made you smile when you saw them.

Well, first of all, EVERY page from my Creative Team makes me smile. I am tickled to see them using my products to keep their memories. It’s an honor to have them on my team! I happen to think I have the most talented CT at the Sweet Shoppe. 😉 Here are 3 that stunned me recently . . .

A scrapbook page with Bonjour, Beautiful Day by Eve. I am always so amazed by how Eve can pack as many elements as she does into a layout and make it all look like a perfect work of art! She’s so talented.

A scrapbook page with Singleton 69 – Snip Snip by Erin. This page by Erin took my breath away when I first saw it. The moment captured, the shadows that make the elements look real, and her skill at embellishing the template to make it her own.

A scrapbook page with Books are Fantastic by Alyna. I just LOVED these sweet pictures and how Alyna rocked a half-life layout with my kit. Alyna has such a great eye for balancing a page and she always surprises me with her layouts! It’s so fun to see what she’ll scrap next.

The Babes created some gorgeous layouts with B is for Birthday. They really show off how amazing Brook’s kit is, and we hope their pages inspire you.

So go fill up your shopping cart with $10, and B is for Birthday will automatically be added for FREE! This special offer will only be available through Friday, October 26 when our new releases go live, so don’t delay! And don’t forget to come back next week when we have a little sneak peek into our fun, bi-weekly sale involving our amazing featured designers! Have a great weekend!
