Thursday Treats – Dear Diary 9/23
“Memory,” wrote Oscar Wilde, “is the diary that we all carry about with us.” When you hear the word diary, what is it you think of? Perhaps it’s a small pink book with a locking latch that you stashed in your most secret hiding place so your siblings couldn’t find and read it. Maybe it’s a handsome leather journal with creamy acid-free pages you write in with your favorite pen every day with a cup of coffee or glass of wine. Possibly it’s an app on your phone or tablet. Or maybe, like me, it’s a series of notebooks you started with the best of intentions and abandoned after two or three entries.
No matter the form it takes, a diary is a record of the writer’s own experiences, observations, feelings, and attitudes. They can be a log of our day-to-day activities, a stream-of-consciousness expression of our thoughts, or a record of our dreams and hopes for the future.
Doesn’t that sound a lot like a scrapbook page?
September 22nd is Dear Diary Day, a holiday “aimed at celebrating the way diaries help us get our thoughts out and document our lives.” Just like scrapbooks, diaries are a memory-keeping tool for ourselves and future generations. They illustrate how life has changed from one generation to the next, including how things are done, words that are used, and attitudes that have shifted or evolved.
We’ve got lots of kits and templates to help you create a diary entry with your next scrapbook page:
Sometimes, the most intimidating thing about a diary entry – or a scrapbook layout – is the blank page. So the next time you’re stuck with writer’s block, consider these prompts and see if your words begin to flow:
- Describe your perfect morning.
- Write about the 5 most beautiful moments you’ve ever witnessed.
- What is going well in your life right now?
- What do you know to be true today that you didn’t know a year ago?
- Journal 10 beauty self-care ideas to try.
- When do you feel most in tune with yourself?
- Describe your perfect beach day.
- What do you need more of in your life?
- If today was your last day, what would you do?
- What sets your soul on fire?
- If you couldn’t fail, what would you do?
- Journal the qualities you love best about yourself.
It was Tallulah Bankhead who said, “Only good girls keep diaries. Bad girls don’t have time.” That may be true, but I think all girls (and guys) can make time for themselves to scrapbook!
