Now let’s learn more about Brook!

Tell us about your journey with digital scrapbooking… How did you find out about it? Did you start with paper first? How did you get started designing? Where was your first shop? How and when did you end up at Sweet Shoppe Designs?

My journey with digital scrapbooking began slowly. I was really enjoying paper scrapping and was on creative teams which helped make the hobby more affordable. But still, the cost of pursuing the hobby outside of the monthly kits was hurting my budget as a young mom of a 2 year old and newborn. I also found it more and more difficult to spread out my supplies and scrap with little kids in the home. Since I had a background in graphic design, eventually I was tempted to try. Sweet Shoppe was one of the first stores I purchased from! Once I realized I could get the same creative satisfaction from digi, and be able to stretch my budget much further, I was sold on it. It wasn’t long before I began attempting to design my own elements and several close designer friends took me under their wings and mentored me on designing my first kits. My first shop was here and I will never leave!

How do you define your style? What does that style include? How has your style changed over the years?
My style is playful & fun with a love for color and a touch of uniqueness you won’t find anywhere else. I absolutely love a kit or template that has that something special you can’t really put your finger on, but it’s there. I love kits that contain elements or patterns I’ve never seen before. I love templates with inspiring quotes and wordarts already done, and placement elements that are nice enough to use even if you don’t have a kit! I probably pour too much time into everything I make, but as an artist it’s important for me to love what I create.

Where do you see your designs going in the future? Is your focus changing in any way?

I don’t see myself changing too much about my style in the future. I like my current direction. I think my biggest challenge in my life right now is finding the time to create. My hope is that in the future I will be able to focus on my designs more than I am today.

Where do you find inspiration for a new kit or template?

I often doodle my ideas for templates in my notebook. I then take a picture of them and pull the photo into photoshop to use as a “pattern” or some sort of starting point when I design. Here’s an example of that:

Are you an adventurous person?  What has been your greatest adventure?

I am! A little less so the older I get. My idea of adventure has gotten a bit more tame. But when I was younger I loved wild adventure. I have travelled to many places and have seen and done some crazy, amazing things! One of my greatest was doing a skycoaster drop off of a 300 ft high crane in Dania Beach. But my favorite adventures these days is getting in my car and exploring the beauty of Florida. I absolutely love finding shells and walking to remote areas to see the natural wonders of my state.

What’s your most memorable childhood adventure?

As a child of the 80’s I lived for those moments after school (and after my homework was done) chasing sunsets on my bike in my neighborhood and the surrounding areas… and chasing that evasive ice cream truck I could always hear somewhere in the distance.

Would you rather go on a relaxing vacation or an adventure hike?

Is it too much to want both? My ideal vacation is a blood-pumping hike in the mountains followed by a relaxing soak in a hot tub, sitting on the porch of a cabin watching sunset or around the fire pit with hot cocoa and nice conversation. Here’s pics from our recent vacation to Blue Ridge that satisfied all of these things for me!

What’s your favorite knock-knock joke?

What’s the difference between a hippo and a zippo?

Well, one is very heavy and the other is a little lighter. 😉

That’s my favorite dad joke. It makes me happy because the Zippo lighter is made very close to where I was born. We’ve visited the factory.
