One Kit, Endless Possibilities with The Nifty Pixel
These days, more than ever before, we’re conscious of how far we can stretch a dollar (or a pound, or a Euro). When we make an investment in a creative pursuit like our family’s memory-keeping, we want to know we’re using our money in a smart way.
That’s one of the things we love most about the digital form of scrapbooking: digital scrapbooking supplies are all reusable.
Purchase a physical sheet of patterned paper or a package of alphabet stickers, and you’ll be able to make use of them on one layout.
Buy a pack of digital patterned paper or a set of digital alphabet stickers, and you can use them … and re-use them … and use them again – on as many layouts as you’d like!
Welcome to the April installment of “One Kit, Endless Possibilities” – where we show you lots of different ways you can use and re-use a single digital scrapbooking kit.
This month, we’re featuring a brand-new never-before-seen soon-to-be-released collection from Em of The Nifty Pixel. This collection is not only ideal for the readers among us, but also for masculine-styled layouts and more. It’s called One More Chapter and it will be part of the Sweet Shoppe’s new releases coming this Friday, April 10th.
This collection features a neutral color palette of black, white, grey, and shades of brown with pops of red and peach. The elements and word art are centered around the theme of books and reading as well as cozy warm beverages like coffee. It’s ideal for layouts about your favorite books, pages showcasing young readers, entries in a reading journal, and even projects centered on graduations and other life transitions. Talk about versatility!
The digital kit can be purchased separately, or you can save money when you buy the bundled collection. The bundle includes word art, journaling cards, a mixed media pack, and a printable set of bookmarks.
We challenged our creative team of SugarBabes to really put this kit through its paces and come up with as many different ways of using it as they could imagine. They delivered fifteen unique layouts, each deliciously different. You’re in for a real treat – there’s major inspiration ahead!
Sugar Babe Amie gives us our first layout with an on-theme use of the kit focused on the books she read during the month of November. Amie is a prolific reader – just look at that calendar of books she read in a single month! – and I love her use of the word art strips to create a subtitle for her page.
Amie says, “I LOVED the bookmarks in the bundle! The fun book patterned papers and the library cards were my favorite pieces to use.”
Sugar Babe Evelyn shows us another way to make use of the collection’s theme in her layout that focuses on young readers. That sweet photograph of her grandsons reading together converted beautifully to black-and-white, and it really allows the colors in the kit to pop.
“I love that this kit,” says Evelyn, “it is so versatile. It can be used to scrap your favorite books or readers from childhood to adulthood! There is such an amazing assortment of papers, mixed media and ellies to choose from! Here I scrapped our oldest grandson reading a book to his youngest brother.”
Sugar Babe Carrie used this kit and focused on an alternative theme with her layout about her love of coffee. When you pick up a kit or collection, be sure to look through all the word art and wordy stamps that are included with it. Many times, you’ll find phrases included that allow you to document a secondary or peripheral topic like this one. I adore the way Carrie used that adorable coffee cup and saucer to provide a visual entry-point into her layout!
Sugar Babe Krista focused on yet another alternative theme of this kit with her page focused on her eldest daughter’s high school graduation. Phrases like “The best is yet to come” and “A new chapter” give you another way to use this collection to record memories beyond its initial theme of books and reading. And look at the way Krista used the metal plate – reminiscent of a card catalog’s pull handle – to frame and include the year. So cute!
Sugar Babe LeeAndra demonstrates that you can always use a kit in an un-themed way when you that simply match the kit’s colors to your photographs. “I knew as soon as I saw this kit that it would be perfect for this photo of my husband,” says LeeAndra. “He generally only wears neutral colors just like the ones featured in this collection so I knew everything would “go” and I chose to use the beautiful mixed media pieces to add interest to the page without taking away from my husband’s portrait. Bonus: even though this is not a book-themed page, he is a huge reader so the couple of stampy bits I used here add a fun personalized touch.”
One of the frequent requests we get from customers is, “More Masculine kits, please!” Sugar Babe Kim B. shows off how this collection fits the bill with this masculine-styled layout about her son. “My son is writing a novel,” says Kim, “so this seemed like the perfect kit to scrap a page about it. It has lots of great elements, including paint and scatters (which I can’t live without!), and the colours are perfect for a masculine page.”
If you’re a more minimalist scrapbookerwho loves creating clean and simple layouts, you can absoutely make use of this kit despite its plethora of paint. “As soon as I saw the elements in this kit,” says Sugar Babe Jacinda, “I knew exactly how my page would look. The bookmarks are so me, and the stamps are perfect for any book themed page. This kit is packed with so many fabulous elements any book lover would appreciate.”
On the other hand, if you’re more of a pocket-style scrapbooker, this collection also looks great laid out on a grid. Sugar Babe Ally used a template from Erica Zane’s EZ Pages #21 and created her layout block-by-block. “The word art in this kit is so perfect for any reading or bookish layout!” says Ally. “I love the ephemera and fun elements Em always includes in her kits, and this one is no exception.”
Sugar Babe Cherry focused on the collection’s pre-designed cards to create her photo-free layout. She used one card to house her journaling and two additional cards with quotes to support her page’s theme. After all, pocket cards aren’t just for pocket pages!
If you love art journaling, you will love this kit! “Who can resist a kit about reading and coffee!?!” says Sugar Babe Judie. “Another Chapter is bursting with dimensional and artsy elements that are perfect for any scrapping style. And that stash of word art from Em? Total lifesaver for lazy journaling days, quick story snippets, or adding a little extra textual magic to your pages.”
If, on the other hand, you prefer a magazine style layout, Sugar Babe Rebecca demonstrates how this collection can do that, too. “This kit is amazing,” says Rebecca, “and a must for a book lover or any stories about education. The patterned paper of ads for various Webster Dictionaries is what started this layout. My son found this massive 6in dictionary published in 1956 at the thrift store – and had to have it. I love how this page turned out!”
Rebecca goes on to say, “I choose the magazine prompt to push me out of my comfort zone for a fun challenge.” If, like Rebecca, a magazine-style layout is outside your normal scrapbooking wheelhouse, do what she did and begin with a template. Rebecca made use of the Editorial Play v.2 set (also by The Nifty Pixel, just like this collection) for her layout.
Another fun way to make use of a kit is to focus on one favorite element and include it multiple times on your layout. Sugar Babe Charlene says, “I’m always drawn to a kit that has a focus on books and reading. But, it was the typewriter element that called my name as soon as I saw it. It reminded me of a prop typewriter I made for my son, Hunter, when he was portraying a famous poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist: Langston Hughes.”
Repetition is a core design principle that helps to create unity, consistency, and rhythm. By replicating the typewriter on her layout and using it in five spaces, varying its size and rotation, Charlene reinforces the theme of her layout and guides the eye from one photo to the next.
I love words, and on my layouts, that means I often create large, eye-catching titles. This collection made it easy to mix a word art stamp and the two alphabets to create a big ol’ title for my page.
The word art came from the kit’s stamp that reads “In My BOOKISH Era” and includes a red heart over a black line art sketch of a woman sitting cross-legged with a book in her lap. (Take a look at Jacinda’s layout above to see the stamp as-is.) Knowing that I’d be using a photograph of myself as a toddler, I wanted to use the stamp without the grown woman. Enter the power of Photoshop’s layer mask!
I used the Color Range tool to select all the black in that design; then I refined the edges with Select & Mask, and finally added a layer mask to hide the selection. That left me with just the words and the red heart, minus the areas where the black line art sat atop it. I liked the resulting distressed look, so I duplicated the layer, split it into two halves (the heart with “in my” on one and the word “era” on the other) and arranged it on my layout with the word built from the alpha in-between.
When you want to stretch a kit even further, do like Sugar Babe Karli and combine it with another kit!
“Books are kind of my jam so this kit is right up my alley!!” Karli says. “There is so much to love – the neutrals and pops of red, paint splatters, and alllll of the fun ephemera to play with. The alphas are also perfect for titling!!”
Karli combined One Chapter with Truthfully by Pink Reptile Designs. “even though the themes of the kits are as different as can be,” she says, “it was so easy to combine them to create a cohesive page.”
Our final layout comes to us courtesy of Sugar Babe Heather, and it’s a gorgeous example of the kind of unique art you can create with digital tools. I love the way she extracted part of her photograph and layered it atop the stacks of books – an element from the kit – she placed in the background.
“This kit is absolutely huge so there is seriously something for everyone and for any style page!” says Heather. “I was drawn to all the fun artsy stamps and papers. I also love the stacked books and lamp so I knew I wanted to feature those on my page.”
One kit, fifteen different ways to use it on a scrapbook page … the takeaway is clear: “going digital” is a great way to stretch your crafting dollars! Whether you opt to create a layout that’s on-theme for the kit, an adjacent theme, or completely un-themed by focusing on color instead, the power is in your hands. You can go clean-and-simple or artsy and layered, create a pocket-style layout or use pocket cards on any layout you choose, repeat a favorite element over and over, play with the alphabets and word art to create a stand-out title, or mix the kit with another to give yourself lots of options. Do one of these, some of them, or all of the above – after all, with a digital kit, you’ll never run out of stickers or embellishments because you can use them over and over again!
We hope you’ve enjoyed this sneak-peek at Em’s newest bundle, Another Chapter.
