This week in TV…

Hello. It’s Keely here and I’m going to be frivolous today and talk about something completely unimportant….television. Admittedly it’s not the best use of time, but I like TV. I could live without it, but I wouldn’t necessarily want to.  There are two big television happenings in my house this week.

The end of Oprah.

I think I was in 8th grade when The Oprah Winfrey Show started. Oprah has come on at 4:00pm, everywhere I’ve lived, same time, year in, year out. I was a latch key kid and I’d race home to watch it after school, sometimes while I did homework. If  it was a particularly good topic, I’d grab the phone phone with the long cord, and would  talk and watch with a friend. Years went by and The Oprah Show really did become part of pop culture.

I’ve watched on and off over the years. When we got our Tivo, it was one of the first shows I set to record, I’d watch the topics I was interested in and I’d skip the rest. I’ve been entertained, touched, and inspired over the years. I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, and I must admit, I’ve learned a few things too. I’ve been one of  the millions that’s grabbed an Oprah’s Book Club selection or two or three. If I’m being honest, there were periods of time where I’ve been kind of over the whole Oprah thing too, I’ve rolled my eyes, and had some spells where all I could muster was “really?!” . But I always seem to come back. When she announced the end of her show, I didn’t think too much of it, it seemed so far off, and it just wasn’t a big ping on my radar. Now that the final show is airing, TODAY, I’m feeling a little bit sad about the end. I think of all the milestones, life changes and events that have taken place over those years. It’s been a very long time, Oprah’s been a fixture. I started watching as a young teen and now I’m well, I’ll let you do the math. It is the end of an era, and I’m saying a fond “Farewell!”.

and then “Hello!” to So You Think You Can Dance

The latest season starts tomorrow night. I LOVE, LOVE this show. If I’m still a bit sad about the end of Oprah, So You Think You Can Dance will be the balm that eases the pain. I wait for it all year long and it’s become my summer staple show.  I make sure it’s recorded even if I watch it live. There have been performances we’ve watched over and over. It’s one of the few shows that my kids and I equally enjoy. My husband even likes it. The dance, the costumes. It’s a whole lot of fun. There’s usually a lot of commentary on our part, we always end up with a few favorite dancers. I am a great arm chair judge if I do say so myself. My youngest daughter gets a work out, it’s impossible for her to not try out some new moves during the breaks. It’s pure entertainment and we’re more than ready for another great season.

And that is what is happening on my TV set, let the countdown begin.
