Hot 4 Hybrid

Hey hey sweet shoppers! Col here (late) again with another edition of scissors and glue style.

So we all know that Target has a great dollar spot section for snagging stuff on the cheap to alter and dress up with goodies, but do you ever wander in the Michael’s dollar spot? It’s a veritable treasure trove of goodness! I find at least 1 thing I can alter every single time I go, usually in the form of a fantastic little notebook. Is anyone else as obsessed with notebooks as I am? No? Ok, moving on. 😉

So a while back I saw these fabulous little 5″ x 5″ notebooks hanging out in the dollar spot. There had all sorts of other little things to go with them like magnets, clips of some sort, and even coordinating pencils, but all I cared about were these notebooks. They had several different types, but they all featured a  cut out of some sort on the cover, like this one:

Cute, but I knew I could jazz it up with some brighter colors and an awesome digital kit. You could alter it into approximately 3426543 themes. Round holes = sports balls, fruit slices, cd’s, plates of food, just plain old fun colored circles, ANYTHING. At the time KCB had JUST released her fantastical Juicy kit:

I’m sure you now see where I’m going with this. So since they were only $1, I grabbed 6 or 7 of those notebooks, all in different cut out styles, and went to town. For today’s post I played with 2 of the same style.  Here’s what I came up with:

Now here’s a close up look at those gorgeous fruit slices. They were glittery in the kit, and lost some of their sparkle when I printed them. To make them stand out, I added a thick layer of glossy accents glue by Ranger, right overtop of the image. It dries clear and now my little circle fruit slices look like epoxy accents! Just the right touch to make them stand out in all their glory.

If my craft area weren’t such a mess so that I can’t find anything, I would have located my clear embossing enamel and given that a whirl. I have some glue pens and I would have traced the outer edge of the fruit with the pen and then added clear embossing enamel, heated it up, and seen what I had. I bet it would look fantastic, and I know that I need to dig it out and give a try. If you don’t want to mess with either of those, they sell small glass circle pieces that you can use to create the same look as the glossy accent. Just easier and with no drying time! It’s those little touches that can really make your project stand out.

So don’t forget to check out the dollar spot in other stores just to see what you can dig up. You never know what you might find! I’ll be pairing these notebooks with some iron-on onesies to give to a friend who is having a baby girl. The perfect little sweetness to welcome her into the world.

Have a great day everyone!

  • Great transformation, Col! I always just pass over those items, but think I might give them another glance and see what I come up with.

  • Awesome make over! I’ve been wanting to buy those notebooks, but the circles had me stumped. You’re brilliant!
