Hot 4 Hybrid Wednesday

Hey hey sweet shoppers! It’s time for another look into the world of scissors and glue! Today I want to look at making cards for those boys in your life, whether they are big or small. It seems like people struggle with “masculine” cards, and I’m here to lend a hand.

First off, I picked a kit – Kristin’s gorgeous new My Everything:

I know, you might be looking at that thinking “But Col! It’s a girly kit! Look at all those hearts and flowers!!” I see those things, but I also see some awesome blue and brown papers and elements hanging out in there too. So that’s the kit I’m using, now I need a card layout. I played around and decided I liked this:

The best part about card sketches? They are totally neutral! It’s up to you to decide what kind of card you make by using it. I liked this sketch so much that I made both a “boy card” AND a “girl card” with it, using the same kit! Here are my 2 cards:

Flowers and elegant scrolls for the girly card, and argyle and solids for the boy card. Yes, I know, there are hearts on the boy card, but I don’t think they’ll mind too much. I changed up the template a bit once I was playing around with it. I removed the skinny center piece (which I had planned to substitute with a ribbon originally), and I used the same patterned paper for the larger center panel. It was just too pretty not to use, and I think the blue cancels out the girly-ness of the elegant pattern on the boy card. Plus, how gorgeous is that argyle?!?! Here’s a look at the 2 cards, up close.

So next time you’re feeling stuck trying to make a manly card, just try looking at your stash from a different angle. You might be pleasantly surprised at what you discover 🙂
