365 Days of Bliss: Around the World in a Summer

Hello SSDers!  It’s Tracy here to share with you a little bit about what my son and I have been doing this summer.  As you may have seen from some of the posts in the forum, I decided to share a little culture with my kiddo while he is out of school.  We got a world map, made a passport and I did lots of googling to get started.  We began our journey in North America, then traveled to South America, on to Australia, then Africa and we are currently working our way to Asia.  We’re taking it a continent at a time and going at his pace.  This means a lot of what I plan doesn’t actually happen and sometimes we do things that weren’t planned because he takes a particular interest in something we read in a book.

My son is 6 years old and began reading this past year in Kindergarten.   His school library has a fantastic series of books for this age and reading level that we have really enjoyed.  “A Look At: _______” by Helen Frost.  There are so many different countries covered in this series.

We’ve been lucky as our public library is also doing a country them this summer and we’ve been able to do some crafts and scavenger hunts there too.  So far we’ve made foods from other countries, learned about native animals, colored flags from all over and talked about the climate in many places.  Here’s a little sample of some of the things we’ve done.  I can’t wait to finish off our summer with Asia and Europe.  Hope you enjoy seeing what we’ve learned 🙂
